Diverticulitis is the term used for inflamed diverticula. Diverticula are small pouches  that can develop in any part of the intestine, but appear most commonly in the colon, specifically the sigmoid colon. If stagnant fecal material stays in the diverticula for a prolonged time, the diverticula can become inflamed. The presence of the pouch is called diverticulosis.
