What is an esophagus ulcer and how is it caused? An esophagus ulcer is an ulcer located in the esophagus. The Esophagus is the tube that leads from the throat to the stomach. When the esophagus is inflamed, swollen and irritated, it is referred to as esophagitis (itis - meaning infection / inflammation) or GERD = Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease. When partially digested food and liquids travel from the stomach back up into the esophagus, that food is mixed with stomach acids, which can irritate the esophageal lining and eventually can cause an esophagus ulcer. People will experience acid reflux and heartburn symptoms.
For some people, the acid reflux is related to the incorrect or partial functioning of the lower esophageal sphincter, a group of muscles that normally close off the esophagus from the stomach, keeping the food in the stomach. GERD can also be caused by asthma, especially if asthma started as an adult and does not seem to respond to asthma medication. Other indications that GERD may play a role in asthma sufferers, is if a person notices that their asthma symptoms may get worse after exercise, after a meal, at night or after lying down. What can cause shortness of breath? When acid enters the esophagus, a nerve reflex is triggered which can cause airways to narrow, therefore causing shortness of breath.
Other causes for an esophagus ulcer can occur after food poisoning, excessive vomiting, surgery or side effects of medications such as ibuprofen, aspirin and others.
Symptoms you can experience are difficulty swallowing, a painful burning sensation, of the esophagus, nausea and heartburn. The esophagus can also get infected, raw and irritated due to a weakened immune system (HIV), medications such as corticosteroids as well as by viruses such as herpes, candida infection or fungi. Once the esophageal tissue is inflamed and infected, an ulcer can result thereof.
A perforated ulcer in the GI Tract (gastro-intestinal tract) including the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, the small and large intestinal tract, can affect surrounding organs. When this happens, serious complications can follow, to the point of being life threatening and may require emergency surgery.

How can an esophagus ulcer be prevented?
- Eat small, balanced meals throughout the day and maintain a healthy weight
- Within 3 hours of going to bed, avoid any foods or liquids
- Elevate the head of your bed by 5-6 inches, in order to keep the food and liquids in the stomach
- Avoid Smoking, alcohol, coffee, tea, sodas, chocolate and fatty foods, as all these items tend to relax the esophageal sphincter
- Keep the consumption of acidic foods to a minimum such as tomatoes, oranges, lemons, grape fruits and fruit juices - as these types of foods can irritate the esophagus
-
Exercise of any kind is a great stress reliever, also increasing the secretion of the 'good mood hormone' seratonin. If exercise is not your thing, try meditation and other stress-reducing strategies such as a walk outdoors in fresh air and sunshine.

Customer Testimony: How Active Manuka Honey helped my Esophagus Ulcer
Hi Elaine
I have Acid Reflux so bad, that I eventually developed an ulcer in my esophagus! Having tried all the medications pre-scribed by my doctor, I was getting frustrated with the side effects. So naturally I started surfing the web. That is when I found your website - Thank God - there is a natural remedy for my condition. I have taken Active Manuka Honey, 3x 1 teaspoon a day for 3 weeks, to help coat my esophagus. It feels very soothing. I no longer have any pain. I can feel that I've been healed. Thank you so much Elaine for importing this natural honey from New Zealand, doctors do not want me to know about! K.M. Albequerque, N.M
