What is a fever blister / cold sore, and how is it caused?

How can I prevent getting fever blisters / cold sores?

Avoid any physical contact such as kissing and sexual intercourse, with a person who is currently experiencing an HSV-1 or HSV-2 outbreak. HSV-2 can also be transmitted via oral-genital contact.

For some people stress seems to trigger fever blisters as well as not getting the required amount of sleep, such as at least 8 hours a night.
