What is royal jelly?
Royal Jelly is a unique food secreted by young nurse bees as larva food for the queen bee located in the queen cells. When a bee larva is feed royal jelly, the royal jelly causes a special metamorphosis to occur, and a full grown queen bee emerges. Royal jelly is produced by two glands, the hypopharyngeal and mandibular glands located in the head of the worker bee. Worker bees eat pollen, digest it and then use the pollen's nutrients to produce royal jelly.
Royal Jelly is rich in proteins, vitamins, enzymes, minerals, hormones (trace elements of testosterone), lipids, glucides, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, inositol and folic acid.
Since the queen bee is exclusively feed royal jelly, her life-span is 50-70 longer than that of a worker bee. Royal Jelly is also well known for it's natural anti-aging effect on humans. Royal jelly is a white, pale or yellow substance and has a consistency of condensed milk and tastes slightly sweet and acid if taken fresh.

| How is royal jelly produced? Beekeepers produce royal jelly using a special hive management technique. At first, they remove the queen from the hive. As as result, the hive has a strong urge to raise a new queen. The beekeeper helps the hive by transferring very young larvae into special queen cells made of beeswax. The worker bees then feed these larvae with lots of royal jelly. When the royal jelly in the cells reaches its maximum amount, the beekeeper harvests the substance, and then puts the queen back in the hive. One queen cell produces about 250mg of fresh royal jelly. |
