Let’s face it… this time of year, you are going to eat some things that are not exactly healthy. Wings are an old standby during summer BBQs and football season. Deep fried, they can be a problem, which is why we are going to healthy them up as much as possible by using a honey soy glaze as well as using an air fryer instead of a deep fryer to make them.
If you have not yet invested in an air fryer, do so soon. You can find something that is workable for under $50 and pretty much replace your entire oven with a top-tier air fryer, but that will still only cost you less than $200. Once you get the hang of using it, the food comes out just as crispy as it would with a deep fryer but you save a LOT of calories and bad cholesterol in the process.
For this recipe, I like to make the glaze up at least a day before so the flavors can combine. Then, when I am ready to use it, I just warm up what I need and save the rest for later.
Soy Honey Glaze Ingredients:
- ¼ c sugar
- ¼ c raw honey
- ½ c soy sauce
- 1t coconut oil
To make the soy honey glaze:
- In a medium-sized bowl, combine all ingredients and whisk until fully combined/dissolved.
- Cover bowl and allow to sit in refrigerator overnight so flavors can fully meld.
- When you are ready to use glaze, warm up glaze over low heat while stirring constantly (you do not want the mixture to burn).
For the wings, set your air fryer to 30 minutes at 380 degrees Fahrenheit. Allow the air fryer to warm up for six minutes before placing wings in basket. When the timer gets down to 24 minutes, place wings in basket and allow to cook. When there are 11 minutes on the timer, turn wings over to ensure all sides are browned and crispy.
While the wings are cooking, you can start to warm up the soy honey glaze. When there are three minutes left on the cooking timer, dump wings into large coverable bowl, then sprinkle some of the soy honey glaze over wings. Toss, then immediately return to the air fryer to finish off for the remaining three minutes.
When the timer goes off the wings will be nice and sticky and packed with flavor! Enjoy.
