Rabbits Love These Raw Honey Treats!

October 01, 2018

Manuka Honey , Raw Honey

While you can always buy rabbit treats at your local pet store, there’s something fun about making your own treats. Whether you bake them or make them raw, your rabbit will certainly appreciate the effort, especially if you make them with raw honey. If you’re interested in trying out a few different types of homemade treats, we have a couple of great ideas for you.

Bunny Biscuits

Fortunately, for those of us who are average bakers at best, this “bunny biscuit” recipe is a simple one your rabbit is likely to take to. To make bunny biscuits, you’ll need a pureed carrot, one teaspoon of raw honey, half of a mashed-up banana, a quarter cup of oatmeal, and a quarter cup of rabbit pellets.

  1. With a blender or coffee grinder, grind the oatmeal and the rabbit pellets into a powder.
  2. In a large-enough bowl, add all of your ingredients and mix together. For roughly one or two minutes, knead your dough using both of your hands.
  3. Roll your dough out in quarter-inch layers in between some plastic wrap. From there, use a cookie cutter to cut the dough into shapes. Note: You should choose a smaller-sized cookie cutter, as larger treats may be a bit much for your rabbit.
  4. Bake the treats at 325 degrees Fahrenheit for about 30 minutes. Once finished, turn the heat off and let the treats sit inside the cooling oven for around one hour. Serve one or two treats immediately if you prefer, and then refrigerate the rest.

Treats for Your Guinea Pig or Your Rabbit

To make this simple treat recipe, you’ll require one cup of oatmeal, one cup of rabbit pellets, six tablespoons of olive oil, two tablespoons of raw honey, and 2/3 cup of vegetable broth.

  1. Mix all of your ingredients together in a large-enough bowl before rolling the dough out and cutting it into shapes. Make sure to use all of your dough.
  2. Bake the treats at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 20 minutes. From there, turn your oven off and let the rabbit treats cool down inside your oven for about one hour before serving one to your pet rabbit.

One thing you must remember when baking treats for a rabbit is you should never include table sugar, as this can lead to dental and obesity problems in your rabbit. If you’re looking for a way to sweeten treats for your rabbit, it’s better to use fruits or honey, but you should use these sparingly and just every now and then. While your pet rabbit might enjoy some overly-sweetened foods, they could get sick easily from the added sugar.
